We are here, in the holiday season. This is a time for joy and celebration.  It is also a time of indulgence. Everywhere you go, you are faced with festive feasts and many sweet treats.  We know how tempting all of this is, but it is important to keep your oral health in mind during all the festivities. Our staff has put together a list of dental tips to get you through the holidays and keep your smile healthy and happy.

Dental Tips; Start with Moderation

There are the cookies, the candies, the hot buttered rum, and other lovely sugary drinks. It is all so tempting and easy to just say, it’s the holidays, so it’s OK, but being mindful not to overindulge will not only help your waistline, but your teeth too.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated amongst all the holiday cheer is a good thing to remember. Drink plenty of water. Reaching for the water will help rinse away food particles and drinking water also helps to neutralize the acids that form in the mouth. This promotes a healthy environment for your teeth. Choosing water over a sugary beverage whenever possible is always a good idea.

Mindful Snacking

As we gather for holiday parties, we are always faced with delectable options.  Opt for the tooth-friendly options. For example, apples and carrots act as Mother Nature’s toothbrush as they stimulate the production of salvia and reduce plaque buildup. Crunchy fruits and vegetables help in cleaning your teeth naturally.

Never Skip Oral Hygiene

The holidays are filled with hustle and bustle, party going, shopping, cooking, decorating, and such.  It can be easy to forget your oral health care routine.  Don’t let that happen to you. Stick to your routine. Be consistent with brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day, even during the busiest times such as the holidays.

Choose The Sugar-Free Options

Although still not the healthiest choices, sugar-free or low-sugar are much kinder options for your teeth, but they still allow you to enjoy the sweetness. Check the labels on items when you are shopping for less sugar and use recipes for your holiday treats and meals that are low in sugar.

Maintain Regular Dental Checkups

Do not let the busy holiday season be the reason you are skipping your oral checkup. If you are due for your dental checkup, get it scheduled.  Get it out of the way before things start getting too crazy. Regular dental visits are essential for catching any potential issues early and keeping your smile in top-notch condition and is one of our best dental tips.

 Traveling and Oral Care

Many people hit the road to visit friends and family for the holidays. Pack for easy access to your oral care products, including toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and any other essentials that you may use to keep up with your oral hygiene. Maintain your oral care routine even when you are on the go. Keep up with the oral care no matter where your holiday spirit takes you.

A healthy smile is the perfect accessory for any holiday gathering, so make sure to give your teeth the care they deserve during this joyful time of year. By being mindful and incorporating these holiday dental tips into your celebrations, you can enjoy the festive season while still prioritizing your oral health.
